What is Phishing?—Phishing Social Media
Updated over a week ago

Phishing is an attack that aims to steal sensitive information by tricking individuals into revealing their personal data. This can include passwords, bank accounts, 2FA codes, private wallet keys, and other important information. Criminals use various techniques to carry out phishing attacks, such as:

  • Sending fake emails or text messages claiming to be from official sources

  • Creating fake websites

  • Developing counterfeit apps

  • Impersonating official staff on social media

  • Posting false event links on social media

  • Pretending to be a customer service agent.

For example, criminals may impersonate BIT customer service on Telegram and initiate a private chat with the user. They may claim that the wallet cannot be used during a meeting and ask for assistance in making a transfer. This is a common way for criminals to steal funds.

To avoid falling victim to phishing attacks, BIT users should:

  • Not disclose personal information on social media

  • Contact BIT staff only through official channels such as the website or communities

  • Verify the identity of individuals before sharing personal information

  • Enable security settings on social media such as Telegram, including 2FA and disabling automatic file downloads

  • Be cautious of any unsolicited requests for sensitive information or transfers of funds.
